I have always maintained an interest in mathematics. In this blog, you will see some of my thoughts on this subject.
Most people tend to think of mathematics as a science, and rightly so. Many of the concepts in mathematics find applications in the sciences. In addition, one of the salient features of mathematics is the concept of a proof, which requires deductive reasoning demanded of scientists.
What appeals to me about mathematics, though, is that it is also an art. Like a poet or painter, mathematicians are not confined to work within the realms of reality. Mathematicians work with abstract concepts such as groups or topological spaces that do not necessarily need to be tied to reality, even though their inspirations often come from reality. Working in the abstraction requires creativity of an artist. Some results find themselves to be useful but that is not the primary concern. In this sense, mathematics can rightly be considered an art.
